Devotion for the week of March 16, 2007 Keep focused on the cross. That is our Lenten journey’s goal. Keep focused on the cross. For in this, we see the salvation of God. Like a farmer driving a tractor, who keeps a point of reference before them to make sure they plough a straight line, we, too, are to have a point of reference and live life on the straight and narrow. It is the cross. The painter, Piet Mondrian, created many works of art that consisted of vertical and horizontal lines. Big deal, right? But, the idea behind his art is very powerful. He understood vertical lines to represent the immortal, the infinite, and the divine. The horizontal lines represented that which is mundane, mortal, and finite. Where the vertical lines and horizontal lines intersect is at the cross. It is where God in Christ dies for the human family and all creation. It is where salvation happens. Vertical lines and horizontal lines are all around us, in architecture, in nature, etc., and so the image of the cross is always before us. Keep focus on this point of reference, and as it transforms our hearts to love as Christ loved us, we may plough through life and drive toward salvation. Let us pray…Gracious Lord, we journey with you toward the cross. May we walk a straight path with this point of reference. And, may we obtain salvation in your name. In Christ, we pray…Amen. |
