Devotion for the week of June 1, 2007

June 3rd marks the Sunday of Holy Trinity.  The Holy Trinity is a mystery of the Christian faith.  How is it that we worship one God in three persons?  As much as we try, we can’t explain the Trinity.  We can only grasp it by faith.

So, what can we say about the Trinity?  In answer, we turn to Martin Luther who said, “All three Persons, the whole Godhead, turns Himself to us in order that we poor wretched men should be helped against sin, death, and the devil, that we may be brought to justification, the Kingdom of God, and eternal life.”  In the Trinity, we recognize that God is always reaching out to us in all the expressions of the Three-in-One, One-in-Three.  That is a powerful thought.

Perhaps, by this understanding of the Trinity, we can even go so far as to see God continually reaching out to us in all facets of life; because, of course, the Trinity is at work in all facets of life.  The Trinity is about creation.  God is reaching out to us each new day and in all the blessings of this world.  The Trinity is about redemption.  God is reaching out to us where we see signs of hope and new life in our relationships with our self, with our neighbors who are near and far, with our planet, and with God.  The Trinity is about sanctification, that is, becoming like God.  Christ the Lord loved and served others.  God is reaching out to us when we love and serve others, as well as when others love and serve us.  Think about the manifold ways God reaches out to us.  The Trinity is all about this wonderful news.

Let us pray…Blessed Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we give you praise for reaching out to us that we might be your people.  May we in turn reach out to others and give glory to your Holy Name.  In Christ, we pray…Amen.
