Grace’s History
The identity of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church has been formed by over six decades of history and by its heritage founded upon the Bible.
Following the end of World War II, as life in America began to return to normal, a vision for a Lutheran Church, in the Highland Park area was forming. Like many post-war suburbs, Highland Park saw an influx of young families and development, giving the area a strong need for a church to serve the growing community. In 1947, this vision became a reality when the first Sunday services were held in Gorgas Hall, the Township community building and fire hall. Dr. W.W. Barkley was called to be the leader of the mission project. Within one year, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church was officially formed with the help of more than one hundred forty-four charter members.
In early 1949, Rev. C. Arthur Neal accepted the call to lead Grace into the next decade and ultimately nearly forty years of faithful and dedicated service.
Throughout the 1950’s the church experienced enormous growth in membership and property. Under the leadership of Pastor C. Arthur Neal, ground was broken for a new church building in November 1955, which would replace Barkley Chapel. The current church building and sanctuary were dedicated on January 20, 1957. In 1961 a 19-acre tract of land was given to Grace Church to be used as a retreat center. Kentland, as it became known, has recently undergone its third set of renovations since the 1960’s. The most recent set of renovations brings Kentland into the 21st century and affords Grace the opportunity to spread the Good News of Jesus through this unique ministry.
While much has changed over the decades, the traditions and the strong sense of community that were established during Grace’s formative years, carry on today in the 21st century.
